About the Work

Dilapidation, neglect, and isolation are reflected in my work. The focus is not the negative connotations associated with them, but rather, the unintentional allure they can cause. I use the paint's texture as a supporting subject to the object and also as an abstract background. At times the roles reverse and the object is intended to be slightly camouflaged by the paint. Narrative environments are not of interest to me as they would draw focus away from the interaction between these two elements.

The color combinations and compositions derive from details in my daily environment; faded cigarette packs, my peeling bathroom paint, aluminum cups, paper on telephone poles. If I'm looking for something specific, like signs for a series, I take a camera. Most of my sketches are created in Photoshop and then printed for reference. The tangible work is produced by systematically applying acrylic paint onto distressed steel. After the paint is dry I chip, peel, and scrub it into the desired form. Paint layers consist of varying thicknesses. A sealant is applied as the final step.
